Common Types of
Spyware
Infection
For internet users spyware and adware are arguably the biggest
threat to a computer. Recent research has shown that over 60%
of all computers have a spyware or adware application hidden
somewhere on the hard drive. A computer user is likely to be
totally ignorant of its presence.
There is not just one form of spyware, there
are in fact hundreds of variations, which makes it very
difficult for computer novices to even know if they are in
danger. Of the most common types of spyware; browser
hi-jackers, keyloggers, dialers and toolbars are those most
normally found.
Browser Hi-Jackers – these are some of the
most irritating of adware applications and will take over
internet browsing if allowed. This is normally seen with a
change in the default homepage to a website of the
infections choice. Additionally there may also be a rash of
pop-ups appearing during browsing.
Toolbars – toolbars
are a form of browser hi-jack. Most people will have a
Google or Yahoo toolbar installed when they go browsing but
spyware and adware programs can also install their on
toolbars. These toolbars will keep a record of the websites
that a computer user visits, and will then create pop-ups
relevant to those sites. Additionally when search engine
queries are made further pop-ups will be seen.
Keyloggers –
keyloggers are a form of spyware software that will create
a log of anything typed on a computer. When given the
chance these spyware programs will then transmit usernames,
password, credit card and bank details to the spyware
originator. These programs can do a lot of damage.
Dialers - this form
of spyware will take over the modem to dial their own phone
numbers. This is quite easily done without a computer user
even being aware. This can lead to pornographic sites being
dialled at exorbitant phone rates for as long as the dialer
stays connected.
With so many threats, those listed are actually a small
proportion of all threats, it is vital that a computer
connected to the internet is kept secure. Spyware can often
stay hidden for a long time so it is essential that reputable
anti-spyware applications are
installed on a machine. These applications will be able to
locate any spyware that may be hidden away threatening the
safety of the machine.
